The main objective of this course is to introduce you to modern methodologies, principles and tools required for defining and managing projects in complex environments. All participants will get hands on experience in managing complex projects by creating project artifacts and managing different phases of a case study based on a real project. In addition you will get an overview of the main skills needed by a project manager and how to develop them during your career.

Description

The main objective of this course is to introduce you to the methodologies, principles and tools required for defining and managing projects in complex environments following modern project management methodologies. You are going to prepare a formal project plan and business case of a selected project. We will illustrate our cases by real examples that you might get across while participating in an international project.

Credits: You will receive an official Certificate of Attendance upon completion of your course. Please inform the organizing staff if you require any extra supplements, such as Transcript of Records. The student is eligible to receive up to 5 ECTS credits, however please follow the instructions here and consult the acknowledgment process with your university in advance.

Price: Course fee includes the application fee, study materials and afternoon / evening social activities and events, welcome and goodbye drink. Other expenses, such as transportation, meals, accommodation, insurance, personal expenses, extra activities (such as trips outside town, entrance fees, some of the sport activities and rentals), and required equipment (i.e. personal laptop) are not included in the price.

Prerequisites
Considering working as a Project Manager or improving your project management skills to the next level.

Schedule: Monday - Friday, 9:00 - 14:00 = 4 hr 30 min + 30 min break

1st week:

Day 1

  • Welcome, course admin, Introductions, Objectives
  • Project & project management (PM) defined, basic characteristics
  • Project life cycle & constrains
  • Project manager & project team: traits & skills
  • The characteristics of a PM (assertivity, resilience, self-awareness)

Day 2

  • Project environment and company organization (ITIL quick overview, PMO
  • Project stakeholders: overview
  • Managing conflicting Organisational priorities (i.e Operations‘ priorities, Inflight projects)
  • Project Methodologies & standards (Prince2, PMBOK, Agile, etc.)
  • Overview of the differences between Agile and Waterfall.
  • Case study introduction

Day 3

  • Communication (MBTI self-assessment)
  • Project Initiation (Project Mandate, Project Brief, Business Case, Project Charter, Feasibility Study)
  • Project management system and communication plan (sharing and archiving information)
  • Regulated industries (i.e. BioPharma, Banking, Healtcare, etc...) and Audits
  • Homework review and discussion

Day 4

  • Project Initiation (Project Mandate, Project Brief, Business Case, Project Charter, Feasibility Study) - continued
  • The Project Board (Steering Commitee, Project Sponsor)

  • Assigning resources (resource pools, matrix structure)
  • Project Planning (Project Plan, MS Project vs Excel vs other tools)

2nd week:

  • Project Budgeting, Funding & Financial management (Capitalization, ammortization, accruals, etc.)
  • Deliverables, Quality criterias and Project Controls
  • Quality Management
  • Project Execution (Tolerances, Checkpoints, Reports)
  • Homework review and discussion

Day 7

  • Project Stages and Work Packages
  • Managing Issues & Risks (and also assumptions and dependencies)
  • Dealing with difficult situations (exception reports, escalations)
  • Change Management & Change Control
  • Picking up an ongoing project (from another PM or from...nobody)

Day 8

  • Project Governance and reporting
  • Project performance tracking (KPIs)

  • Re-planning and re-baselining
